Tipping Tim’s Weekend Bets

Published:

Goodwood reminds me of the Grand Canyon; it’s lovely to look at but you wouldn’t build a racecourse there. Unfortunately some toff had other ideas so once a week every year we all have to place our bets, close our eyes, and open them two minutes later to see Richard Hughes’ mount pass the post in front, repeated ad nauseam six times a day for five days. The only thing really Glorious about Goodwood is the end, but between now and then I will fire three more arrows in the hope that I can finally hit a target before the festival is out.

The nap tomorrow is Pabusar at a huge price in the Stewards’ Cup (3.50). This 5yo gelding is a bit of a screw but on his day he is far better than his current mark of 93, and his only win came over this course and distance. The same connections tee Field Of Dream up for big handicaps every year, and I can’t help but think that Jamie Osborne has had this race in mind ever since he picked the beast up from Ralph Beckett. There are a couple of small dangers lurking in the twenty-eight horse field, but at likely odds he looks like a bit of each way value.

The next best has to be Integral in the Nassau Stakes at 3.15. Sir Michael Stoute’s three-year-old has a few pounds to find with the jolly Sky Lantern, but she was visually stunning at Sandown and she promises to be even better over another couple of furlongs. There are a couple of potential short runners towards the head of the market, and I fancy Ryan Moore to mow down Richard Hughes in the final furlong.

For the Trixie I will chuck in J Wonder in the fillies’ nursery at Newmaket (2.55). I bet this filly for next year’s Guineas after her eye-catching debut win at Newbury so I’m slightly concerned to see her in a handicap, but she was given a remarkably generous mark of 79 so I don’t blame connections for taking advantage. If she doesn’t win this there will be an ante post voucher in the bin by Stratford station should anyone want it.

Good luck with all your bets this weekend!
