Lockwood can continue Godolphin revival in Supreme Stakes

| 24.08.2013

Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation has suffered a turbulent year with only Dawn Approach flying the flag for much of the summer. The big battalions have started to roll out now though and a treble at York’s Ebor meeting could be a sign of things to come for the remainder of the season.

The highlight of Goodwood’s Sunday fixture is the Group 3 Supreme Stakes at 4.30 and Godolphin rely on Lockwood, a game winner of a conditions race at Thirsk last time out. The grey looked beaten when headed by Diescentric with over a furlong to travel but kept finding more all the way to the line to run out a three-quarter length winner.

He is well drawn in stall one and forcing tactics could pay dividends on this course. Richard Hannon’s Professor had no chance against the rejuvenated Afsare at Salisbury last time and is closely matched with the front-running Boom And Bust on that evidence.

Penitent has not run since finishing down the field at Royal Ascot in June whilst Pastoral Player was unlucky at the Festival meeting here but faces a tricky draw in stall 9.

Godolphin has two live chances in the Katie Taylor Handicap at 3.20 with the unbeaten Groundbreaking and Sandown runner-up Sadiq. The form of Groundbreaking’s debut win may not amount to much and the greater experience of Sadiq could give him the edge.

Top weight Code Of Honor should be able to reverse the form with Broughton on their last meeting here whilst Aussie Reigns also comes into calculations. Pasaka Boy won a good handicap at Epsom earlier this summer but the Queen’s Circus Turn was disappointing at Newmarket in July.

Richard Hannon enjoyed a wonderful festival meeting here and can take the opener with Crystal Nymph just preferred to stable companion Juan Alonso.

Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore suffered a reverse on Saturday when Opinion fluffed his lines with a slow start in the Ebor. They can enjoy better luck with Astonishing in the 5.00 who may get the better of the tough and consistent Bantam.

Selections: 2.10 Crystal Nymph, 2.45 Suspension, 3.20 Sadiq (nb), 3.55 Whinging Willie, 4.30 Lockwood (NAP), 5.00 Astonishing, 5.30 Spray Tan
