Whozthecat and Dick Bos lead raid on Rockingham Handicap

| 20.07.2013

The valuable Rockingham Handicap at 5.15 features many of the field that contested the Paddy Power Sprint at the Irish Derby meeting. A high draw proved advantageous on that occasion and that may be a factor worth considering in trying to resolve this particular puzzle.

British raiders Whozthecat and Dick Bos look to be have been dealt a good hand in stalls 16 and 20 respectively. Whozthecat finished second to Burn The Boats in the Paddy Power with Dick Bos close up in fourth.

Both look to have an excellent chance at the weights and you can’t rule out Joe Eile who was sandwiched between the pair in third, although he is drawn low in stall 5. The top weight Russian Soul has been well supported in the ante-post market and could start favourite on the day.

The five-year-old son of Invincible Spirit certainly has the form in the book having chased home Sea Siren and Slade Power on his last two starts. He was also third to the smart Shea Shea at Meydan in March and a repeat of that form would make him difficult to beat.

He is drawn in stall 8 so must hope for a bit of luck in running. Yulong Baoju and In Salutem could be the pick of a strong batch of three-year-olds and both have been given favourable draws. Johnny Murtagh is riding better than ever and will be full of confidence after landing the Irish Oaks on Saturday.

He teams up with the lightly raced Yulong Baoju for Ed Lynam and his course and distance win will hold him in good stead. Dermot Weld’s Johnny Lynch is on a hat-trick and is yet another worthy of consideration.

Tommy Stack’s Scream Blue Murder has been amongst the market movers this week despite finishing unplaced behind the progressive Fiesolana last time out. He had previously had to work quite hard to win a listed race at Nottingham.

Timeless Call must overcome the number 1 stall if he is to go one better than at Lingfield in March. Tipperary winner Abstraction is another who looks set to run a big race in a wide open handicap.
