Punters backing fantastic summer of sport to continue with Ashes glory
Bookmaker Coral fears another battering from patriotic punters this summer, when the eagerly anticipated Ashes series begins in Nottingham tomorrow. England are red-hot 4-11 favourites to win the five Test series, and have been backed from even money to 5-6 favourites to win the opening match at Trent Bridge this week, a result that would hit bookies already reeling from Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon win and the Lions success Down Under.
“It has been a great time to be a patriotic punter recently, with Andy Murray, the Lions, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish all giving British sports fans plenty to cheer, while the bookies have been paying out millions, and now those winnings are being reinvested on England’s cricketers, with many even predicting a 5-0 whitewash for Alastair Cook’s men at 12-1,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
“Even the weather looks set to play its part, with the sunshine forecast to continue, so we might be performing a rain-dance before the series is over!” added Stevens.
Australia are 4-1 outsiders to win the series, and 11-4 with Coral to begin with a win at Trent Bridge.
