Morrison sweet on Banoffee’s chances in Lancashire Oaks

Banoffee was regarded by many as a serious Oaks contender following her victory at Chester in May but things did not work for her in the Epsom classic. She did not settle into a good rhythm and weakened badly in the closing stages to finish only seventh.

Trainer Hughie Morrison decided to bypass Royal Ascot with the filly and is optimistic that she will be more at home at Haydock than the undulating Epsom course. Kieren Fallon takes the ride and knows her well after steering her to victory at the Roodeye.

Morrison is also represented by Coquet who has proved disappointing since finishing a close sixth in the Oaks last season. She dropped out tamely at Goodwood but may have needed that run after a lengthy lay off.

The favourite is likely to be Godolphin’s Albasharah who went into many notebooks after an unlucky run at the Royal meeting. She had won her first three races in the style of a useful filly and was well backed to win the Wolferton Handicap over a mile and a quarter.

Silvestre De Sousa held her up at the rear but the gaps didn’t appear in time for her in the home straight and she finished strongly in fifth. She gave every indication that the extra two furlongs will suit her and has been backed down from an early 6-1 in midweek.

David Simcock’s Moment In Time won a Group 3 event over course and distance last month when defeating Nymphea and Ambivalent. The third has since gone on to win the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland so the form looks better than it first appeared.

Midnight Soprano won a Group 3 at Cork on her most recent start having previously scraped home in a listed race at the Curragh. The quicker ground might be a concern for her connections.

The John Gosden pair of Wannabe Loved and Gallipot need to step up on previous form to take this whilst Emirates Queen steps up in trip after a fair effort at York behind Dalkala.
