The FIFA World Cup is the most famous football competition and the tournament, which is held every four years, will take place in Brazil in 2014.

World Cup bets are placed all over the globe as passionate fans support their national teams with added fervour and that was the case when favourites Spain became the current champions in 2010.

The event was held in South Africa for the first time and the final was decided by one goal as Andres Iniesta scored in extra time to give Spain victory over The Netherlands.

Surprisingly that was Spain’s first ever World Cup win, the same number as both France and England.

England have won one World Cup odds

Sir Alf Ramsey’s England famously won the World Cup in 1966 with a controversial final win against West Germany.

With the tournament held in England and the final contested at a packed Wembley, the home side were level at the end of 90 minutes with the scoreline at 2-2.

However in the 98th minute Goeff Hurst’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced down onto the goal line, however the referee, with the help of his linesman, awarded the goal.

That match has gone down in English folklore but the team, now managed by Roy Hodgson are not among the favourites in the betting for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil have won the Jules Rimet Trophy on five occasions and they are expected to do well once again with Felipe Scolari – who led them to glory in 2002 – back in charge of the side.

Spain won the 2010 World Cup odds

The odds on Germany, who last won the World Cup in 1990, and Argentina, who have won the trophy twice, are both proving popular with punters.

Argentina can boast one of the best players in the world in the form of Lionel Messi and the Barcelona player carries the hopes of a nation when he plays.

Christiano Ronaldo, who also plays in Spain for Real Madrid, will attempt to lead Portugal to a first ever win, whilst Robin Van Persie will be hoping that he can help The Netherlands break a World Cup hoodoo which has seen them finish runner-up on three occasions.

Italy have won four World Cups including in 2006 however they are often neglected in the World Cup odds because they have a reputation for playing less attractive football than some of their rivals.
