Tipping Tim’s weekend bets

Published:

It’s a bit of an ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ Saturday this weekend but, for all that I love the great meeting, I’m quite glad to see the back of Royal Ascot this year.  Although I managed to turn it round a bit late on, for the most part Richard Hughes and Jamie Spencer were probably the only people in Britain who displayed more ineptitude during the Royal week than I did.  In fact the only people getting it even more spectacularly wrong than us three were those claiming Hughes’ paint-by-numbers win on Sky Lantern was the ride of the week, and I can only assume that they were watching the wrong race.

I’m keen to get back on the winning track tomorrow and, on the assumption that Richard Hughes is similarly inclined to restore his reputation, the nap this weekend is Producer under the champ (no that’s not a typo) in the 3.30 Newmarket.  This race is full of non-winners and, with class act Hawkeyethenoo possibly better in big fields, Richard Hannon’s seven-furlong specialist looks a sound bet to land his second Group 3.  If Hughes drops him in off a lunatic pace and goes away to win by ten lengths, it’s not a big price he nails back-to-back Ride Of The Week awards too.

The other horse I like at Newmarket tomorrow is Beaufort Twelve in the 4.05.  This beast’s rider (I can’t recall who it was) managed to get stuck for a run in a nine-horse race last time, and William Jarvis’ newly-gelded thinker passed the post with plenty left.  He was decidedly unreliable in the days when he had his own testicles but, given that the chop often aids consistency, he is entitled to another chance off the same mark tomorrow.

Aidan O’Brien wins the Irish Derby every year so, despite having nothing better to do on a Saturday night these days, I won’t bother watching the Curragh action.  Therefore the one for the Trixie will have to be at Newcastle, and my Dad’s text tip for the Northumberland Plate (3.15) is Moidor.  Given that it takes him twenty-minutes to turn on his mobile it speaks volumes that he found the time to fire me this nugget last night, and I’ll be following my master in on the John Quinn good thing.

Good luck with all your bets this weekend!
