Julie Camacho’s Diescentric can defy penalty at Newcastle

Julie Camacho’s Diescentric started life with Sir Henry Cecil’s stable and looked to have a big future after landing the Wood Ditton Stakes on his racecourse debut. Although he has not quite lived up to that original promise he has still proved a useful performer and is fancied to bag a fifth career victory.

Last time out he beat Rex Imperator over this distance at Doncaster and carries a 7lb penalty in the 3.50 at Newcastle on Saturday. He may just have needed the run when third here in May and should be able to get enough cover from stall 3 before delivering a late challenge.

Santefisio is likely to be a popular choice after his excellent run in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Virtually unconsidered at 40-1, Keith Dalglish’s seven-year-old finished first in his group on the far side of the course but was only fourth behind Lightning Cloud who was racing on the opposite side.

Santefisio will still have to carry top weight of 10st and any further easing in the ground would not help his cause. Bertiewhittle will still be a leading fancy for this despite a slightly disappointing effort at the Royal meeting. He was expected to run well after a fine second in the Victoria Cup over course and distance but he never featured, eventually finishing in midfield.

Godolphin’s Masteroftherolls is open to improvement having won in Dubai during the winter. Victory in a valuable handicap at Meydan is difficult to equate to turf form but he was a useful performer in France in his younger days and cannot be ruled out.

Anton Chigurh is another unknown quantity. He was progressive last season but ran no race at all in the Irish Lincoln and something was clearly amiss. He has been given time to recover by Tom Dascombe and could be one to keep an eye on in the betting market.

David O’Meara’s Able Master was a fair second at Catterick last time out whilst Paul Hanagan is an interesting booking for Richard Fahey’s Gatepost. He met with all sorts of trouble at Newmarket and was still less than four lengths down at the line suggesting a return to form could be imminent.
