The Fugue among 11 declared for Prince Of Wales’s Stakes
Published:The Fugue was made favourite for the Oaks on the strength of her Musidora victory but a combination of bad luck and the extra two furlongs meant she could do no better than third. She had no answer to Princess Highway here 12 months ago but bounced back to win the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.
The Fugue may well have won the Filly & Mare Turf race at the Breeders’ Cup in November with a clear run and this trip and going should suit her perfectly.
Roger Charlton’s Al Kazeem upset the odds when beating Camelot in the Tattersalls’ Gold Cup at The Curragh last month. That represented a career-best performance for the five-year-old son of Dubawi and he looks to be on an upward curve.
Camelot won the 2000 Guineas and the Derby last year but was denied the triple crown when second to Encke in the St Leger. He made no show in the Arc and later required surgery for an attack of colic. He won well on his return to action at the Curragh and has Windsor Palace employed in a pacemaking role here.
French raider Maxios cannot be ruled out after producing a fine burst of speed to win the Group 1 Prix D’Isaphan. The son of Monsun runs in the famous Niarchos colours and has been performing consistently well at this level.
Godolphin are represented by Saint Baudolino who finished second in the French Derby last season when trained by Andre Fabre. He finished fourth to Hunter’s Light at Meydan in February on his most recent start.
The globetrotting Red Cadeaux finished second to Animal Kingdom in the Dubai World Cup and has earned more than £3m in his career to date. He had previously enjoyed Group 1 success in the Hong Kong Vase but his last run in Singapore was slightly disappointing.
Andrew Balding’s Side Glance also posted a career-best when fourth in Dubai and finished third to Frankel at this meeting 12 months ago. Afsare was an unlucky second in the Arlington Million in August but refused to enter the stalls at Goodwood.
Mukhadram held off Main Sequence in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and takes a step up in class for trainer William Haggas. The field is completed by Clive Brittain’s Miblish who was nearly three lengths behind Mukhadram in third place at Sandown.
