Channel 4’s extra coverage to boost Royal Ascot betting turnover say Coral

| 16.06.2013

On the eve of the biggest week of the flat racing season, leading bookmaker Coral say the decision of terrestrial broadcaster Channel 4 to show every Royal Ascot race live could boost betting turnover on the meeting by up to 10%.

“With no major football tournament taking place this summer, racing will take centre stage this week, and history tells us that races shown on terrestrial TV attract greater betting turnover, so Channel 4’s decision to show all 30 races live next week is something we welcome, and could lead to an overall increase in money staked on the races of as much as 10%,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Coral say they would also welcome discussion on the running order at the Royal meeting, with a build up to the feature race each day something they favour.

“With all 30 races being shown live on Channel 4, one obstacle to the feature race each day being run later appears to be have been removed, and we would be interested in the thoughts of all parties concerned as to whether a change to the running order is up for discussion. It’s obviously not just about betting turnover, but building to a showpiece climax is something that happens successfully on Qipco Champions Day, as well as at other major race meetings around the globe,” added Stevens.

On the track, Dawn Approach is the 5-4 favourite with Coral for the St James’s Palace Stakes, Animal Kingdom is 8-11 favourite for the Queen Anne Stakes, and Shea Shea heads the betting for the King’s Stand Stakes at 15-8.

“A South African sprinter, an American-trained Dubai World Cup winner, and the Irish star Dawn Approach will form a very popular treble on the opening day of the Royal meeting, and wins for all three will get punters off to the best possible start,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
