Coral hoping Derby festival will give much needed boost to sport

| 30.05.2013

On the eve of Epsom’s Investec Derby festival, bookmaker Coral is hoping the two day meeting will provide a much needed boost to the sport, after a run of negative headlines that have hit racing in recent weeks.

“The Mahmood Al Zarooni steroid scandal, Eddie Ahern’s ten year ban and Frankie Dettori’s delayed comeback have all ensured racing has received plenty of media coverage in recent weeks, but sadly it’s not of the kind the sport needs nor seeks,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“The Investec Derby festival however provides the perfect opportunity for racing to get back on the front foot, with two great Classics in prospect, as well as St Nicholas Abbey looking to complete a Coronation Cup hat-trick. The Derby is by far the biggest flat race of the year in betting terms, and industry wide turnover on this year’s renewal could top £10 million, as punters choose whether to be with the hot favourite Dawn Approach, or against the unbeaten colt. There is no major football tournament for the meeting to compete with this year, so the racing will take centre stage in betting shops, while betting turnover has held up well since the switch of terrestrial coverage to Channel 4, so we have no fears there,” added Stevens.

Dawn Approach is 10-11 with Coral for the Investec Derby following the final declaration for the colts’ Classic, while St Nicholas Abbey is 2-5 favourite for the Investec Coronation Cup.
