Novices can step up and cause problems in next year’s Gold Cup

Lord Windermere and Boston Bob weigh in at massive early-prices for next year’s Gold Cup after dominating the Cheltenham novice stakes.

The pair are available at 16/1 to win the festival showpiece in 2014 and, after two novices occupied the first two places in this year’s Gold Cup, either one of the duo could represent exceptional value.

Bobs Worth claimed the RSA Chase in 2012 and, after Lord Windermere claimed that coveted prize this time around, his yard will be confident their Irish seven-year-old can make an impact on the final day of the 2014 festival.

A big question surrounding his participation, however, could be his staying power. Lord Windermere has never failed to place outside of the top two over a 2m trip, yet as the journey has lengthened, his win ratio is not quite so striking. Storming home at the expense of such a prestigious field, over a 3m2f length will be a mammoth ask; whether he is up to it remains to be seen.

This could point punters in the direction of Boston Bob.

He failed to finish in this year’s RSA Chase, though he was going exceptionally well until a fall at the last curtailed his progress when he was guaranteed a place at the least.

Placing at consecutive festivals is no mean feat and, were it not for sheer bad fortune, he would have accomplished it; he must have a decent claim each-way next year.

Bobs Worth is definitely going to be the horse to beat after a sensational performance in the Gold Cup and, at 3/1, there’s sure to be plenty of people punting on him at this early stage. After winning at three consecutive festivals, he proved what a special commodity he is and will definitely take some stopping next time around.
