An American will win the Women’s US Open – but which one?
Published:Home players have dominated this year
For the first time in 36 years, the semi-finals of the Women’s US Open is an all-American affair.
Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys make up the remaining quartet.
It’s the first all-American last-four in any Slam event since Wimbledon in 1985.
And it also means that the tournament will be won by an American other than Serena Williams for the first time since 2001.
But who will win it? Coral News are on hand to serve up the Semi-final previews…
Venus Williams v Sloane Stephens
The grand dame of tennis, 37-year-old Venus Williams first reached the final of this event an incredible 20 years ago.
Her opponent tonight is 24-year-old Sloane Stephens, once tipped as America’s next big star and successor to the Williams sisters.
This has been a big year for both players. Venus has enjoyed a remarkable comeback, reaching two Slam finals – her first in eight years – while Stephens missed the first part of the season after undergoing foot surgery.
Venus, with all that experience is the 8/13 favourite, but 5/4 shot Stephens won their only previous meeting and is in fine form, boasting a 13-2 record in recent months.
Both players needed three sets and a tie-break in their quarter-final matches, so this could be a gruelling test of fitness and skill.
Top bet – Over 2.5 sets @ 6/5.
Coco Vandeweghe v Madison Keys
A first Slam final awaits for one of Coco Vandeweghe or Madison Keys.
Both players have been this far before, with Vandeweghe reaching this year’s Australian Open semis, and Keys making the last four Down Under in 2015.
The 25-year-old Vandeweghe will be on a high after defeating number one seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in the quarters.
But the 5/4 outsider lost both previous meetings to 8/13 favourite Keys this year, suggesting that her 22-year-old opponent has the edge.
Both of those clashes were close contests however, and Vandeweghe’s sizeable serve will keep her in the mix. Another three-setter looms at 6/5.
Top bet – Set betting – Keys 2-1 @ 11/4.
