All eyes will be on Sandown this weekend as Altior bids to defend his unbeaten record over fences in the Tingle Creek Chase at 3pm.

Nicky Henderson’s star has won nine in a row over the bigger obstacles and is undefeated overall since April 2015. He’s expected to extend that run on his seasonal reappearance, although our traders can report an ease in the market for the eight-year-old.

The son of High Chaparal remains odds-on at 8/13 but has lengthened from an earlier price of 1/2.

That’s because some classy rivals remain in the hunt for the Grade 1 prize following the latest entry stage for one of the biggest races this side of Christmas.

Opponents

Saint Calvados is given the biggest chance of upsetting the odds. Harry Whittington’s raider is a 9/2 shot after getting the better of Footpad on his reappearance at Naas last month.

Another chaser who enjoyed a perfect return to action is Sceau Royal. The six-year-old took to fences like a duck to water last season. He returned to action at Cheltenham with a promising victory in the Shloer Chase in November.

The pair are ahead of veteran Un De Sceaux, who looks set to drop back to the distance for the first time since winning the Tingle Creek in 2016. Great Field, Pingshou and Gods Own are among the remainder left in.

“Although Altior remains odds-on favourite for the Tingle Creek, it looks as if he will face some classy rivals on his seasonal reappearance, and so we have eased him slightly at the head of the betting,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
