Alan Shearer “The best team won in top of the table clash”

Coral ambassador Alan Shearer reflects on last night’s Premiership game between Liverpool and Tottenham, saying that he believes Liverpool deserved to pick up all three points.
The all-time leading Premier League goalscorer paid particular praise to Rhys Williams and Curtis Jones for their performances in the game, while he does not believe defeat harms Tottenham’s title aspirations too much.
Speaking to Coral, Shearer said: “I wouldn’t go along with Jose’s view that the best team lost. I also don’t agree with him when he says Liverpool don’t have many injuries. What I will say is, it was a fantastic game of football. Liverpool were much the better team in the first half. They dominated possession. Spurs had one shot on target which was Son’s magnificent goal.
Going in at half-time, Liverpool would have been very disappointed that the scores were level. Jose changed it half-time. He brought Sissoko more into the middle and Lo Celso played in the three just behind the forward. That worked better for Tottenham. They actually missed three very good chances.
I thought Liverpool were fantastic, particularly in the first half. They have that fantastic record at Anfield and they were desperate not to give that up. The second goal was a brilliant corner in from Robertson and a bullet of header from Firmino.”
Shearer singles out Williams and Jones for praise
“Liverpool had two young kids in there and one of them was making his first Premier League start. Rhys Williams was on loan at Kidderminster last season. The way he slotted in alongside Fabinho and mark one of the world’s best in Harry Kane, I thought he had a magnificent game. I told Jurgen that after the game and, of course, he agreed that it was two special performances from the young players.
Curtis Jones looked so comfortable in the team. He wasn’t afraid to try things. The future looks very good for Liverpool.”
Tottenham remain in the title hunt
“Although they were beaten, Tottenham are very much still in the title race and I think Jose believes that too. That is why he was so irate after the game. They are not going to go away and they will be in the hunt come April and May.
Jose was complaining about Jurgen Klopp’s antics on the touchline but we have seen him go onto his knees before after a goal. All managers do it and you have to accept that. He was so upset because he believed his team should have taken something from that game.
I think there will be four or five teams going for the title this season with the unpredictability of the season. Liverpool are three points clear as we speak but their away form has been very average. They have only won one away in six. That has to improve as they can’t keep relying on that incredible home form. I do think it will be Liverpool who will lift the title again in May though.”
