Alan Shearer talks about Leicester, Spurs, Man City’s Champions League hopes

Ahead of the Champions League group stage kicking off on Tuesday, September 13th, Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer had plenty to say about the Premier League contingent and their chances.

In the latest in a series of exclusive video interviews with our very own John Hill, Shearer spoke about Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Play below to hear his thoughts.

“Leicester are not going to win the Champions League”

“I was interested in their draw,” Shearer said of Premier League champions the Foxes. “There’s two ways of looking at it. You can think ‘we’ve actually got a chance of getting through to the next round’, because realistically Leicester are not going to win the Champions League.”

Drawing on his experiences after winning the Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers and missing out on battling big names in Europe the following season, Shearer feels the Foxes can be forgiven for being a little underwhelmed.

“The players at Leicester might have also felt a tinge of disappointment, thinking of glamour draws they could’ve got,” Shearer added.

“Spurs will take Champions League seriously”

Shearer will be in attendance at Wembley om Wednesday, September 14th as Tottenham take on Monaco in their group opener, and he expects Mauricio Pochettino’s men to take the competition seriously.

“They’ve worked very hard to get into it, so they’ll want to stay in it,” Shearer continued.

“They’ll think, much like Leicester with their group, ‘we’ve got a chance of getting through here. We shouldn’t waste it’.”

“Man City will be looking to win it”

Shearer points to Manchester City’s Champions League experience, bringing Pep Guardiola in as manager and player recruitment all adding up to a serious statement of intent from the Etihad outfit’s wealthy owners.

“It’s taken them time to feel their way into the Champions League,” Shearer added. “There was a lot of improvement in their [European] campaign last season, so they are now more experienced.

“They’ve now got one of the world’s best managers. He’s so experienced at that level and, with all the money that has been invested in Manchester City, they’ll be looking to win it.”
