Best from the lower leagues
League football goes on the backburner this midweek, as the international scene takes centre stage. There’s a round of friendlies, headlined by Germany vs England, before the World Cup qualifiers return at the weekend.
There are some domestic matches for Coral punters to get involved in on Tuesday and Wednesday however, with League One, League Two and the lower tiers of the Scottish game giving accumulator backers an option. Port Vale beat Coventry
League One and it’s not a difficult choice to oppose Coventry this season. Barring a painfully brief upturn in form during the winter, the Sky Blues have been poor throughout, and go into this latest clash with a record of seven defeats, two draws and a win from their last 10. That includes three losses on the bounce. Vale are no world beaters, stuck in the relegation zone themselves, but have picked up 15 points more than their hosts, despite playing fewer matches. 23/10 Port Vale starts us off.
Bolton beat Oxford
At the other end of the League One table and Bolton finally appear to have found their feet, pushing for the automatic promotion that was expected of them pre-season. Phil Parkinson’s boys are unbeaten in five, winning each of their last three, and victory on Tuesday would move them to within six points of Sheffield United in pole. Opponents Oxford enjoy home advantage, but struggle to nail down any kind of consistency, with their last five reading lose-lose-win-lose-win. Bolton make sense at a tempting 9/5.
Accrington beat Morecambe
Dropping down a level and Stanley are trusted to bag a maximum when travelling to the Globe Arena. There is very little between these two in the pecking order, just a point in fact, but Accrington have a game in hand, and know victory here would lift them up to 14th. They are the form team of the two, losing just one of their last 10 league starts, and are unbeaten in eight. Stats like that must be followed at this level, especially against an opponent who has lost each of their last four. Stanley merit their place at 11/10.
Luton beat Newport
Newport are another side from the lower leagues that it pays to go against. They will be playing Non-League football next season, barring some kind of miracle, and have won just two of their last 10. Luton are up in the promotion play-off places, and although they have been treading water of late, this looks an ideal opportunity for The Hatters to bank a maximum. Even money on Luton can’t be ignored.
Livingston beat Stenhousemuir
The final leg of five takes us to Scotland and League One. Leaders Livingston are a Championship club in-waiting, and that is probably their level at the minute. They have made easy work of this division since being relegated last season, and under the guidance of former Chelsea favourite David Hopkin, Livi are a very capable side. Top vs bottom here, let’s take the obvious at 4/11.
