New Bay misses rematch with A Shin Hikari
New Bay has been ruled out of the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot (June 14th), for which he had been 6/1 third favourite with Coral.
The Andre Fabre trained colt won last year’s French Derby before finishing third in the Arc behind Golden Horn.
However, he was beaten a long way by A Shin Hikari on return to action at Chantilly in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan and Fabre doesn’t think he was ready for the Royal meeting following a gallop this morning.
Owner Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: “New Bay did not work to Andre Fabre’s satisfaction on Tuesday morning and will not be coming over to Royal Ascot.
“He is fine but did not please enough in his work to bring him for a Group One.
“Soundness-wise, he has got no problems so we will give him a bit more time and regroup.”
His absence has seen A Shin Hikari harden into 6/4 favourite (from 7/4) with Coral. Time Test is 3/1 (from 4s), with Found the next best in at 7/1.
Coronation hope Nemoralia blooms in final workout
Nemoralia delighted trainer Jeremy Noseda in her final serious workout this morning ahead of next Thursday’s Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The filly was twice placed at Grade 1 level in the US last autumn and ran out the impressive six-length winner of a Listed race at York on return to action last month.
Nemoralia worked with Frankie Dettori aboard as she tuned up for the Coronation Stakes, and the signs are positive that she has improved since York.
Writing on his website, Noseda said: “Nemoralia did her last serious piece of work ahead of Royal Ascot this morning. Frankie Dettori rode her on the Limekilns and he couldn’t have been happier with her.
“She is in great shape. Touch wood, everything is going to plan.”
Three classic winners all declared for St James’s Palace
A mouthwatering clash between the winners of the English, French and Irish 2000 Guineas remains on the cards in the St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday, March 14th, after they all stood their ground at today’s latest declaration stage.
Newmarket 2,000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold, his Curragh conqueror Awtaad and runaway Deauville scorer The Gurkha are set to get the opening day of the Royal meeting meeting off with a bang.
Faster conditions are expected, and connections of Galileo Gold are praying that no heavy rain hits the Berkshire venue.
Harry Herbert, racing advisor to owners Al Shaqab Racing, said: “All racing fans are looking forward to the opening day of Royal Ascot.
“If everything goes to the St James’s Palace Stakes sound and well, a cracking race will be in store and it is what the race is all about. It will be a proper championship race.
“He has the right to improve as he is only lightly raced but it will be a different race on better ground.”
Coral make the Aidan O’Brien trained The Gurkha their 6/4 favourite for the 1m contest. Kevin Prendergast’s Awtaad continues to attract support and is now 11/4 second favourite (from 3s), whilst Galileo Gold has been eased out from 7/2 to 4/1. It’s then 12/1 bar the big three.
