2015 Investec Derby: Giovanni Canaletto the wishing-well prediction

Published:

If local Epsom folklore is to be believed, Giovanni Canaletto will win the Investec Derby tomorrow (Saturday, June 6th).

Tradition dictates that the name of the Derby-winning horse is chalked on to the wishing-well of the Amato pub in Epsom the morning before the race – and today Giovanni Canaletto’s name appeared.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Galileo is currently 7/1 for the colts’ Classic with Coral, official betting partners of the Investec Derby Festival. Ryan Moore, who already has two Derby successes under his belt, takes the ride.

The pub, once called the Hare and Hounds, was renamed after Epsom-bred and trained Amato took the 1838 Derby. It was the 30/1 shot’s only racecourse appearance.

The last time that the wishing-well prediction came true was in 2009, when Sea The Stars was victorious. Last year Kingston Hill’s name appeared, but the Roger Varian-trained colt could only finish second to Australia.
